The Autonomous Community of Extremadura, with its spectacular natural surroundings, is a unique destination for fly anglers. With more than 1,500 kilometres of shoreline across three of Spain’s most renowned reservoirs — Orellana, Zújar and La Serena — it has earned its place among Europe’s leading fly fishing destinations.
The combination of crystal-clear waters, unspoilt landscapes and challenging species such as common barbel and carp makes this the perfect destination for an unforgettable fishing experience.
One of Spain’s least-known and most unspoilt rural regions, Extremadura offers remarkable scenery, welcoming local communities and exceptional cyprinid fly fishing in its reservoirs, making it one of the country’s finest destinations for targeting large barbel and carp on dry flies.
Fly Fishing in the Reservoirs of Extremadura
Orellana, Zújar and La Serena
In Extremadura, the reservoirs of Orellana, Zújar and La Serena provide the ideal setting for fly fishing. Their clean, crystal-clear waters offer the perfect habitat for common barbel and carp while also providing outstanding sight fishing opportunities, making every catch an exciting challenge.
Fishing Methods and Techniques in Extremadura
Fly fishing in Extremadura is primarily practised using sight fishing techniques, making it an incredibly exciting experience. When conditions are not favourable for dry-fly fishing, nymph fishing is used by presenting our nymphs along the shoreline where fish patrol the bottom. However, the predominant method is dry-fly fishing, practised stealthily while walking the banks to avoid alerting the fish. The most exciting moment comes when a barbel or carp slowly approaches your fly — you’ll need to wait that extra second before setting the hook.
